Can a sperm lives with out nuclei? If so, why can't we use sperms as a carriers in drug delivery(tissue targeting)?

    agilbert, Associate Research Fellow

Sperm cells actually have nuclei – so it’s not really right to say that they can live without nuclei. I’m not sure if sperm can be used in tissue targeting, but specific tissue targeting is something that is currently a developing innovative field in drug design. Anticancer agents are being targeted to cancer cells that express specific antigens using Antibody-Drug-Conjugates or ADCs. Novel diabetes treatments are being targeted to the liver or pancreas by engaging specific liver transporters and/or designing drugs with specific physical properties. There are even selective estrogen receptor modulators in development/on the market that specifically target bone estrogen receptors and not the breast or uterus receptors. New innovations in this area will certainly bring efficacious medicines with improved safety profiles.

One thing that science literate individuals are frequently asked for help with is to assist with science fair entries.  Many people want to help their kids do well in these because they not only teach the very practical aspects of the scientific method but, when done well can help students get in to a good college and assist in obtaining financial aid for college.  Having been a judge at a number of science fairs as well as having coached students through the process, I thought I would offer some advice on how to do well. 1) Find...
